UNDERSTANDING CLEARANCE CERTIFICATES

Your breeder hands you  a package of papers and tells you "these are the parent's clearances."  The papers are confusing, to say the least, hopefully the following information will help you to understand and recognize the various clearances a little better.

Eye and heart examinations must be done by veterinarians that are specialists in those fields, board certified veterinary ophthalmologists and cardiologists have the special equipment and training needed to properly examine a dog for defects.  Eye examinations of breeding stock should be done annually, until at least eight years of age and preferably longer, as hereditary eye problems can develop at varying ages.  Hip and heart examinations need to be done only once, the age that these examinations should be done varies from registry to registry.
